In Kyoto, Japan, Paul had the honour of studying under two different Japanese Masters for a period of three years. The first being Taiun Matsunami, a Rinzai Zen Priest and abbot of Ryosen-An, Daitokuji Temple in Kyoto, Japan. Daitokuji is one of the largest Zen centers in Japan that houses over 20 temples. Ryosen-An was founded by Ruth Fuller Sasaki and Paul was fortunate enough to spend his early mornings there sitting in silence, sipping green tea and maintaining the gardens. During those same years Paul began studying Reiki under Master Hyakuten Inamoto. They were able to make several visits to the beautiful Mt. Kurama, the mountain where Reiki’s forefather, Usui Sensei, discovered the practice. After three years of in-depth study, Paul completed his teacher training course and became a 5th generation Reiki Master in the Japanese line under Usui Sensei. In 2007, Paul moved to Beijing, China and began studying Kung Fu with Master Zhang Yu Fei. Under Master Zhang, Paul was instructed in the Hun Yuan Style and was introduced to classical Chinese literature and theory. During this time, Paul completed the Bai Ri Zhu Ji, 100 Day Meditation, thus creating the energetic foundation of the Microcosmic Orbit. In Beijing, Paul was also able to begin both treating and teaching Reiki clients. He held weekly Reiki shares and had articles written about his practice in local expat magazines, including City Weekend. He was inducted into the Chen Style Xin Yi Hun Yuan Tai Chi family and became an official 20th generation lineage holder in 2009.
